    I've been knitting my socks as you describe - one size smaller for the sole (and heel) - for many years. Depending on the yarn I short row to even up the length of the foot 2 or 3 times in the foot knitting process. For my family the holes due to wear are much reduced.

    I look forward to hearing what you think as you experiment.
